Last night, my husband asked me to put a liquor cabinet/wine bar thing for him on my list of things To Build, so he has somewhere to keep his scotch decanters, wine, etc. in. He never asks for anything and faithfully supports my unhealthy obsession hobby of building stuff, so I’d really love to make something like this for him! I searched Ana’s (look at us, on a first-name basis… ha!) plan catalog, but can’t seem to find a piece that fits our needs perfectly. So I got to thinking… maybe I could take the next step and actually design something! What! Shutthefrontdoor!
Whatever I build, we’d need it to:
- have an enclosed cabinet that can lock, to possibly keep wandering, underage hands away from the scotch
- hold 6-12 bottles of wine (any more and the Hubs feels compelled to fill every slot and we don’t need that much wine hanging around)
- include a place where he could mix up/serve from, with a drawer to keep a wine opener/various bar tools in
Naturally, I went searching in my favorite (overpriced) furniture stores for inspiration, but didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I was able to collect a few ideas to get my wheels spinning, though…
1) This Parker Spirits Cabinet from Crate & Barrel looks amazing. I LOVE how it opens up, and it pretty much has everything we’re looking for, but I’d have to make the liquor cabinet lock up nicely:
2) This Sheffield Entertaining Bar Cart from Pottery Barn is so awesome. I love the industrial design, but sadly, there’s no enclosed cabinet:
3) Maybe something like this Crate & Barrel Cabria Buffet could work, only with some wine cubbies in the middle compartment:
4) While strolling through World Market yesterday, we happened upon this cool steamer trunk turned bar:
Hmmm… not sure what I’ll dream up, but I’m excited to build this project for my love! What do you think? Any suggestions? I’ll keep you posted…

It’s my first time here. I love creating DIY stuff, too. Good thing your husband is supportive and asks for something like this from you. If I were to be asked, I’d choose the first and the last one because it perfectly suits the needs you enumerated. I’ll look forward to the day you finish this project. Cheers!

Wondering if you completed the liquor cabinet…I had the same idea and I have an old steamer trunk that doesnt do anything except collect dust.

Yep! I finished building the bar cabinet. The post is here: http://jenwoodhouse.com/2012/10/01/brainstorming-bar-cabinet-part-3/ If you ever get around to dusting off that steamer trunk, it would make a pretty awesome liquor cabinet!
