How To Build a DIY Floating Deck
Hi friends, I’m so excited to share our biggest and best DIY project to date! We partnered with Simpson Strong-Tie to build a floating deck and pergola for our neighbors. Our neighbors are a fellow military family and this is our welcome home gift for their deployed soldier. Pretty amazing, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to come home to this gorgeous space?!
We’re thrilled to partner with a Simpson Strong-Tie because they proudly support our brave servicemen and women. What an amazing opportunity it’s been for us to be able to bless our neighbors with this beautiful new outdoor space that they can enjoy for years to come.
I’m sharing the entire tutorial on Simpson Strong-Tie’s brand new blog, Building Strong and will be splitting it up into two separate tutorials. Part One will show you how we built the floating deck and Part Two will cover the pergola project.
Strong-Tie connectors were an integral part of building this deck so that it’s safe and structurally sound. The deck measures about 14 feet by 16 feet, so it’s a pretty substantial size.
These were the parts we used for the floating deck:
I can’t wait to share the pergola build with you – we used the brand new Outdoor Accents™ line, which is both beautiful and structural. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check out the floating deck tutorial here.

I love this!! What a perfect place to relax and enjoy the weather, and what a wonderful welcome home for your neighbor! We have been debating between adding a deck on back or just expanding our current patio, but I know either way now, we need to incorporate something like that gorgeous pergola!

You guys did an outstanding job – your work is so inspiring. Where did you get the black brackets on the pergola?
Thank you and your hubby for your service.

Thanks for the kind words, Kim! The black connectors on the pergola are from Simpson Strong-Tie. It’s their new Outdoor Accents line and they are so great! I’ll be sharing the tutorial for the pergola shortly, so stay tuned!

THANK YOU for posting this! I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to build a floating deck in a specific spot on my property, and this helps me so much, you have no idea. Saving this for the spring – as soon as the ground thaws, I’ll be grabbing my tools and getting to work!
(Also, what a wonderful gift for your neighbors! I love seeing things like this!)

This is absolutely awesome! I am in need (and desire) of a backyard makeover. My husband has been ill for almost a decade now and things around here have taken a hit. What a wonderful gift to give your friends/neighbors. You are a blessing!

Hello, love the idea of an outdoor deck.. I wonder if using those board that lock in and you nail underneath might be better.. so no surface nailheads.. and what about those composite boards?

I like the nice, simple design. Keeping it disconnected from the house prevents so many problems.

Hello, this is such a beautiful project. I would love to build something similar in my own yard. I am curious as to how big th actual purgula is. You mentioned the deck is 16 by 14.
Thanks,

Hi Jen. I admire how you design a room or an area in a house and give it a simple warm vibe. What I love the most are the small details that really catches my eyes. What a lovely unique way to add lighting to a floating deck. Do you have any lighting tips for a gazebo?

Hello, thanks for the helpful article. You built a great place to relax in the fresh air. Only I would add an extra cover so that you have the opportunity to sit at the table in any weather. I plan to create a similar place in my backyard, as I have free space in my backyard, which I plan to use with benefit. I looked through a lot of options, then your version will be the easiest to implement myself with minimal cost. Therefore, your advice will be very useful to me. But I have one question. Is this construction collapsible or is it not a collapsible construction? Thanks.

Gorgeous! All I can say is wow on the post. Building a floating deck makes the house side more elegant. If only I had a few spaces on my lawn so I can be able to build my floating deck.
