Hello! I am excited because I am definitely doing this in the oncoming months. I just have a few questions. Is it possible that you could maybe add an additional piece of plywood above the slats in the middle of this bed? Or could you remove the slats and just do plywood instead? Will it compromise anything else with this plan? Will I need a box frame? I need solid support.
Jen says
Yes, you can support the mattress with either plywood or slats. If you have a box spring, you really don’t need that much support, since your box spring is supporting your mattress. You simply would need cleats to hold the box spring in place. I attached the slats for my daughter’s bed even though she has a box spring, but I’m finding that all those slats aren’t necessary. If you don’t use a box spring, then I’d recommend slats or plywood to support the mattress. Hope that helps! Good luck and happy building!

This is beautiful! However, you might want to change the image that says “Free plans and tutorial.” The plans are available at a cost, right? Or am I missing something?
Jen says
Thanks Sarah! Yes, the plans were free for the first year but are now available for purchase.

Did you apply anything to the slats before you stained them? Like a conditioner?
Jen says
Hi Josh,
No, I didn’t apply a wood conditioner – just the stain and finish!

I am in the process of making my grandson your bed with a few adjustments. Mt question is what kind of glue did you use for the headboard slats. Wood glue or construction adhesive. I was going to use the wood glue but thought I should ask and I also plan on using my small brad nailer to attach them as well. Love the look of the bed and so does my grandson.
Jen says
Hi Martha,
Thanks for your note! I used wood glue. Best of luck!

Hello! About to hold this bed. If I do not want to use a box spring, do I place the slats “higher” on the inside?
