How To Build a DIY Floating Deck
Hi friends, I’m so excited to share our biggest and best DIY project to date! We partnered with Simpson Strong-Tie to build a floating deck and pergola for our neighbors. Our neighbors are a fellow military family and this is our welcome home gift for their deployed soldier. Pretty amazing, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to come home to this gorgeous space?!
We’re thrilled to partner with a Simpson Strong-Tie because they proudly support our brave servicemen and women. What an amazing opportunity it’s been for us to be able to bless our neighbors with this beautiful new outdoor space that they can enjoy for years to come.
I’m sharing the entire tutorial on Simpson Strong-Tie’s brand new blog, Building Strong and will be splitting it up into two separate tutorials. Part One will show you how we built the floating deck and Part Two will cover the pergola project.
Strong-Tie connectors were an integral part of building this deck so that it’s safe and structurally sound. The deck measures about 14 feet by 16 feet, so it’s a pretty substantial size.
These were the parts we used for the floating deck:
I can’t wait to share the pergola build with you – we used the brand new Outdoor Accents™ line, which is both beautiful and structural. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check out the floating deck tutorial here.

I’m so excited to have mine built too. I’ve been looking for inspiration on how it should look like and this is a good start. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Appliance Repair Contractor in Elk Grove, CA.

Love, love, love this. I have been looking for plans to put a Pergola on my cement patio. I think this would work for what I need, just need to figure out how to attach the posts to the cement. I’m thinking there are probably items for doing that from Strong-Tie. I will look into it. Thank you for posting this. I love that you built this for a returning solider, I am a veteran myself and appreciate those that help out our troops.
Thanks again for your post.

Lovely pergola design, just what I have been searching for. Turns out in Sarasota FL where I would like to install the pergola you do need a permit. So I was wondering, do you have project plans that could be used for a permit application? Thanks!

Hello. Do you have the plans and item list shared for the deck build? This is exactly what I am going to build.
